What is root canal therapy?
Each individual tooth has its own blood and nerve supply to each root. This extends to the centre of each tooth and fills a space known as the pulp chamber. Root canal therapy involves carefully accessing the pulp chamber through the crown of the tooth, removing the pulpal tissues (nerve and blood supply), disinfecting the pulpal chamber with a medical irrigant then filling the chamber and root canals with a medical grade rubber filling material before sealing the tooth up with composite filling material.
Why do I need a root canal treatment?
The nerve of a tooth can become inflamed and painful due to decay into the pulpal chamber, a fractured tooth, pulpal haemorrhage from a trauma or a bacterial infection or abscess around the root tips may be present. In order to relieve the pain the nerve tissue must be removed and a root canal filling placed and if infection is present then the bacteria must be removed to allow boney and soft tissue healing to occur.
Why do some root canals treatments require an additional visit?
Some teeth have 3 roots and 4 canals. It can be time consuming to locate, shape, disinfect and fill all the canals in a single visit. If a large area of infection is present then dressing the canals with an antibiotic and returning at a subsequent visit to complete the filling of the canals is advised.
Why does my tooth need a crown after a root canal treatment?
In order to access the pulp chamber of a tooth a hole known as an access cavity is prepared. These are as minimal as possible however the tooth’s structural integrity is compromised and these teeth are much more likely to fracture under the chewing forces unless a ceramic crown is placed over the tooth.
Why do I need a 3D CBCT prior to a root canal therapy?
Individual anatomy of teeth varies between people. Some teeth are multi rooted and have multiple accessory canals in each root. In order not to miss any canals and to improve the success rate of treatment then a 3 dimensional image is taken prior to treatment.
Why are multiple x – rays taken during the procedure?
In order to work out the lengths of each canal, to ensure no canals are missed and the final filling material reaches the tip of each root to create a seal from bacteria low dose x – rays are taken at specific stages of the procedure.
