Where does the colour of teeth come from?
The colour or shade of teeth comes from the inner, softer dentine layer. The outer, harder enamel shell is almost completely translucent and transparent. Dentine is natural a shade of yellow or brown and as we age this layer darkens thus darkening the tooth. Extrinsic staining of teeth comes from foods and drinks we all enjoy and can be removed during a scale and polish.
What product whitens the teeth?
Teeth whitening is carried out using hydrogen peroxide. Dentist prescribed whitening gels are 35% hydrogen peroxide whereas over the counter gels are 5%, meaning prescription gels are more effective and work quicker.
How does the process work?
The whitening gels are applied topically to the teeth in a custom whitening tray for 30 to 40 mins daily over a period of 1 to 2 consecutive weeks until the desired results are achieved. This process is repeated for a short duration of several days once to twice a year to maintain the desired result. The gel soaks into the teeth, gently releasing oxygen as the hydrogen peroxide breaks down into the dentine layer which whitens the darkened dentine.
