Periodontal Treatment
What is periodontal treatment?
The structures that hold the teeth into the bone are called periodontium. These are made up of ligaments, fibrous connective tissue and gum tissue. In health they support the teeth giving them stability but in disease they can breakdown leaving the teeth without sufficient support which can lead to sensitivity, swellings, pain, mobility and even tooth loss. Periodontal treatment comprises several forms but aims to return the periodontium to a healthy state thus halting the disease process.
What causes periodontal disease?
There are many periodontal conditions of varying degrees of severity however most are caused by your bodies immune system reacting to bacteria and calculus deposits on the teeth as a foreign object. The tissues initially become swollen and inflamed as the blood supply to the mouth increases as part of the immune response finally the periodontal tissues including bone begin to breakdown leaving the teeth without sufficient support.
Is periodontal treatment reversible?
Unfortunately only the initial stages of bleeding, swelling and inflammation are reversible. Once the disease has become chronic and periodontal tissue has been lost it cannot grow back however the disease process can be halted with interceptive treatment from your dentist, periodontist or hygienist. The condition will have to be carefully managed for the rest of the patients life.
Why are some people affected by periodontal disease and others not?
From the research we know there is a strong genetic predisposition to periodontal disease, it is often hereditary and runs in families and certain ethnic subgroups are more affected than others. If you are affected by periodontal disease long term management with a structured treatment plan is imperative.
