Composite Fillings

Dentistry has used many materials to restore teeth after tooth structure has been lost due to decay, toothwear or trauma.

Typically materials made of metal or more accurately metal alloys were used. Gold, tin, copper and amalgam containing up to 50% mercury were used.

All these materials had pros and cons. The biggest problem was that none were tooth coloured!

Years of research and development led to the release of composite fillings. These are a blend of resin (plastic) and silica particles. They come in a range of shades to match teeth, have similar optical properties to teeth in terms of translucency and transparency and are adhesively bonded to the teeth as opposed to mechanically retained.

They require minimal preparation of natural tooth structure unlike old fashioned metal fillings.

They typically last 5 to 7 years before they may need to be replaced.

They are suitable for both anterior and posterior teeth.
