Wisdom teeth if present typically erupt into the mouth between the ages of 17 and 21 however they begin developing at an earlier age.
Typically everybody has four wisdom teeth, two upper and two lower however some patients don’t have any and occasionally some patients have more than four!
Our hunter gatherer ancestors typically had larger jaws and we know from their skeletons that they almost always had functional wisdom teeth.
This leads to a condition called impaction. Impaction simply means that the path of eruption of a tooth has been blocked either by bone or another tooth.
This can lead to problems such as:
