What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a bespoke protective covering for an individual tooth to improve the aesthetics and/or reduce the risk of fracture and need for extraction.

What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge is one possible solution to replace one or more missing teeth where there are natural teeth either side of the gaps that require crowns.

What the indications for placing a crown?

Dental crowns can be recommended for numerous separate or interrelated reasons. Dental crowns can improve the aesthetics of older, worn, broken teeth. They are necessary after root canal treatment to protect a weakened tooth and reduce the likelihood of fracture. Crowns are required when older, larger, failing fillings are removed and there isn’t enough tooth structure to support composite filling material.

What are crowns made out of?

Historically crowns were made of alloys of gold mixed with copper and tin. These were popular for a time but fell out of favour due to poor aesthetics. Then porcelain fused to metal crowns were introduced but had limitations with metal shine through and ease of chipping.

Why ceramic crowns?

Modern, ceramic crowns are tooth coloured and give the most natural aesthetics. They require the minimal amount of tooth preparation of any crown material and are therefore very conservative of healthy tooth structure. They are bonded to teeth and therefore very unlikely to fall out unlike older metal crowns that were cemented in place.
