The first stage of any dental treatment is a comprehensive dental check up and clean. This appointment is a chance for you to meet our reception staff, get familiar with the clinic and chat about any concerns you may have with your new dentist.
For your dentist it is a chance to get to know you as a person, chat about your medical and dental history, and listen to what your goals are for your mouth and teeth and to gather as much information about your oral health as possible.
We do that in a number of ways.
Firstly we take very low dose and ultra safe digital dental x-rays. Some of these x-rays may not be suitable if you are pregnant just be on the safe side. This allows us to gather important information about the health of not only your teeth but also the bones of your jaws, face, jaw joints and sinuses. This is to assess if there is any pathology or disease that may need to be treated.
Secondly we complete a comprehensive visual examination of all the tissues in the mouth. The hard tissues of the teeth and the soft tissues of the tongue, cheeks, floor of the mouth, roof of the mouth, lips and gums. This is all documented in your notes with a series of digital photographs.
Finally we get everything beautifully squeaky clean for you. This is achieved through gentle techniques with various specialised instruments that use a combination of water, bubbles and vibration to remove hard calculus build up and stains from your teeth leaving your teeth whiter and mouth feeling fresher!
Once you have had a chance to freshen up with face towel there is ample time to sit with your new dentist to discuss the x –rays, photographs, any diagnosis that may have been made and what your treatment options may be.
