Tooth Extractions
Tooth Extractions & Surgical Tooth Extractions
While we always aim to preserve your natural teeth wherever possible, sometimes removing a tooth is the best option for your oral health.
At Mosman Dental Surgery, we provide routine tooth extractions and surgical tooth extractions with a focus on patient comfort, careful planning and personalised care.
We will explain your treatment options and what to expect before proceeding, so you can feel comfortable and informed throughout your treatment.
Why might a tooth need to be extracted?
A tooth may need to be removed for a number of reasons, including:
- Extensive tooth decay that cannot be predictably restored
- A tooth that has fractured or broken
- Severe infection or an abscess
- Advanced gum disease causing significant tooth mobility
- Teeth that are overcrowded or causing problems with your bite
- Certain teeth that need to be removed as part of orthodontic treatment
- Wisdom teeth that are causing pain, infection or other dental problems
- Teeth that cannot be restored successfully with fillings, crowns or other treatments
Where possible, we will discuss alternatives to extraction and help you understand the benefits and risks of each option.
What is a simple tooth extraction?
A simple extraction is generally performed when the tooth is visible above the gum and can be removed without the need for surgical access.
The area is carefully numbed using local anaesthetic before the tooth is gently loosened and removed.
You should not feel sharp pain during the procedure, although you may experience some pressure or movement.
After your tooth extraction
Some tenderness, swelling or mild discomfort is normal following an extraction, particularly after a surgical extraction. This generally improves over the following days.
To support healing, you may be advised to:
- Keep the extraction area clean as instructed
- Avoid vigorous rinsing immediately after the procedure
- Avoid smoking or vaping during the initial healing period
- Avoid strenuous exercise for the period recommended by your dentist
- Choose softer foods while the area is tender
- Follow any instructions regarding pain relief or medication
- Contact us if you experience symptoms that concern you
It is important to follow your post-operative instructions carefully to encourage normal healing.
What is a surgical tooth extraction?
A surgical extraction is a more involved procedure that may be required when a tooth cannot be easily removed with a simple extraction.
This can occur when a tooth:
- Is impacted beneath the gum
- Has broken below the gum line
- Has complex or curved roots
- Is difficult to access
- Has not fully erupted
- Has significant surrounding bone or other anatomical considerations
During a surgical extraction, a small incision may be made in the gum to provide access to the tooth. In some cases, a small amount of surrounding bone may need to be removed, or the tooth may be divided into sections to allow it to be removed safely.
Stitches may be required and will be discussed with you as part of your treatment.
What happens during an extraction?
Before your extraction, we will examine the tooth and surrounding tissues and discuss your medical and dental history.
Local anaesthetic is used to numb the area. Once the area is completely numb, the tooth is carefully loosened and removed.
For surgical extractions, additional steps may be required depending on the position and condition of the tooth.
After the procedure, we will provide you with detailed instructions about caring for the extraction site and what to expect during healing.
Replacing a missing tooth
Depending on the location of the extracted tooth and your individual circumstances, we can discuss options for replacing a missing tooth.
These may include:
- Dental implants
- Dental bridges
- Partial dentures
- Other restorative options
Replacing a missing tooth may help restore chewing function and maintain the appearance and balance of your smile.
